...About the 9 Monarch colonies that were located this winter season with a 59.3% decrease from the previous season (https://monarchwatch.org, 2024)! We have been closely following https://monarchwatch.org to understand Monarch behaviors and to learn more about their behaviors. Tip: Highly suggest signing up for their emails and bonus if you donate $!
This alarming 59.3% decrease is the second lowest number counted to date! (Yep this has happened before, but Monarchs are resilient) Why such a decrease? Unfortunately, because of drought conditions last fall that extended from Oklahoma deep into Central Mexico.
But why do droughts affect monarchs' deaths? Droughts reduce flowering which negatively impacts nectar production. Monarchs require nectar production to fuel their migration and develop the fat reserves necessary for surviving the winter.
How can we help Monarchs recover?
To do what we have continuously been doing, to plant more milkweed and nectar plants. Milkweed and nectar plants support the breeding population as a great pollinator habitat.
Where can you buy this incredible milkweed??
We highly suggest https://shop.milkweedmarket.org. Or even your local gardening store will have it:)
