A Budding Update on Our Seed Libraries

This year has been a season of incredible growth, both in the gardens we’ve planted and in the community that’s bloomed around them! I’m so excited to share that Camila’s Butterfly Project has three (and counting!) seed libraries throughout the community, each one buzzing with life, color, and curiosity.
These seed libraries have become more than just a place to receive free seeds, they’re small but mighty hubs for connection and learning and raising awareness on the extinction of butterflies. To make them even more accessible, I’ve added bilingual signage (English and Spanish) at each location. This small addition has opened the doors for so many more neighbors to participate. My librarian friends, who see the seed library every day, reported back to me that families and older adults often stop by to chat about what their seeds are growing or to share updates on the # of monarch butterflies visiting them!

This past summer, I noticed something both exciting and unexpected, seed packets were disappearing faster than ever! It was a clear sign that our community was ready to grow, quite literally. Because of that demand, I was able to partner with Hippo Outdoor Living and Terrain Landscaping to keep the seed libraries fully stocked and sustainable. Their financial support helped ensure that more people, from first-time gardeners to experienced pollinator enthusiasts, could access free seeds to start their own butterfly-friendly spaces.

As the seasons change, I’m continuing to stock and maintain each seed library with pollinator-friendly seeds, milkweed varieties, and seasonal favorites. It’s been exciting to update fellow Latinx climate advocates on the GreenLatinos.org discussion board and gather new ideas on how to collaborate with other organizations to scale this project. I hope to expand to more organizations, so more people can experience the magic of planting something small and watching it grow into something beautiful.
If you’ve picked up seeds, donated packets, or simply stopped by to say hello, thank you. Together, we’re nurturing not just plants, but a community rooted in care, sustainability, and shared growth.
